Jefferson County clarifies the reporting of fireworks use

Jefferson County, CO. – As the Fourth of July rapidly approaches, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is asking for your cooperation in accurately reporting the use of illegal fireworks. Each year, JCSO’s patrol units are out in force, along with some units dedicated strictly to fireworks complaints. However, deputies and 911 dispatchers are quickly inundated with fireworks complaints, and the vast majority of these calls report the use of fireworks without a specific address. These types of calls significantly impact and overwhelm the call system, resulting in delayed responses to other critical calls for service. In an effort to deliver a greater impact, JCSO needs your help. When reporting, we ask that you witness the use of illegal fireworks and provide a specific address.
Illegal Fireworks: Fireworks that explode or leave the ground are always illegal in Colorado. The use of illegal fireworks in unincorporated JeffCo is a Class 3 Misdemeanor, punishable with fines from $50 to $750 and /or up to six months imprisonment.
Fireworks Information Line: To report witnessing the use of illegal fireworks, do NOT call 911. Instead, you can call the Fireworks Hotline at 303-980-7340. The fireworks hotline will be open from July 3 through July 5, from 7:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
Jeffcom911 phone app: Citizens are strongly encouraged to download the Jeffcom911 phone app to report illegal fireworks. Simply download the app from your phone’s app store, and starting July 3, you will be able to click the “Report Fireworks” button to submit a report that goes directly to emergency dispatchers at Jeffcom911.
Report online: Residents will also be able to report the use of illegal fireworks through the JeffCom website at: https://spark.backingfire.com/jeffcomco
